Monday is the new Tuesday!

The Tuesday night Bible Studies at the Church have proved popular with many, but there have been a significant number who have not been able to attend as they have other commitments on that night, so, at the recent Church meeting it was decided that Bible Study could take place on another night, Monday was the most popular, especially as we do not need to stop for deacons and church meetings and can have a good run of five weeks at a time. This means that we have a programme for Monday evenings in the early autumn. On 15th September we shall have our harvest supper (menu to be announced) and then on five subsequent Mondays (22nd & 29th Sept and 6th 13th & 20th of October) we shall have our Bible Study from 7.30pm - 9.00pm in the Church room, accessed from King Street. The study follows a booklet – called “Journeys” which we will give out to use each night. I have 10 copies of the booklet so we shall share hopefully one between two. Each week begins with a 6 or 7 minute DVD to make us think and get us talking. I will bring the set to the Church for people to see in September so you know what is happening, and what to expect. The series is advertised as “Exploring faith in the 21st Century” It has been used elsewhere and has gone down well I am told. I really hope that you will be able to attend and maybe even bring a friend if you wished. If there are too many of us or the night is not good for some then maybe we could do it at another time in the week as well ? Talk to me about that if you wish. Watch out for the series on display in the church soon

Thanks

Our thanks to all those who have helped over the summer months, we appreciate the help we have received from m i n i s t e r s , l a y preachers, organist and pianist. Malcolm Mabbutt, Graham Hutchinson and Trevor Boys have filled in in the ‘pulpit’ and Trevor Richardson and Nora Smith have supplied the music.

Thank you very much to all of the friends at

Special Church Meeting

You may have heard rumours from inside Carey but just to put the record straight, Carey will NOT be closing its doors in the foreseeable future. The Deacons have been discussing for many months the future of Carey and they felt the time was right to bring the issues to the church so, as announced last month the church duly held a special church meeting. No major decisions were made except that we should go away from the meeting and spend some time in prayer. It was suggested and agreed that this would include a series of prayer meetings through June & July. The one clear fact that came from the meeting was that for all of us our hearts were at Carey in King Street as it stands now but our heads say that we should look at other options for the long term future of the people of Carey and the type of ministry that would best suit Carey. If you would like to look at the options for both the future of ministry and the buildings email carey@careybaptist.co.uk or contact the Church Secretary.

There will be a normal church meeting on July 9th 2008. On the agenda will be a financial report for the first half of the year including a decision on the donations for 2008 to BMF & BHMF funds and the funding of this newsletter. Also on the agenda is the report of the health and safety audit carried out recently for the deacons.

New Members
We are pleased to welcome Ted and Avril Scarfe into Membership at Carey. They have been worshipping with us since Ted retired as pastor of Earls Barton Baptist Church and recently requested the transfer of their membership to Carey. I am sure the Scarfes will be an asset to Carey, not only as Ted preaches but their experiences will help all of us as we make important decisions for the future. Welcome Ted & Avril
The Boys’ Brigade - Keith Mitchell

July seems a long way away now but I remember it being very busy and memorable month for us at the 1st. Our awards evening took place on Friday the 11th where a number of friends and family saw the boys presented with their awards they had earned in the last 12 months by Battalion Vice President Val Gilbert. The highlight was the presentation of three of the four Gold awards to William Smith, Connor Meek and Ben Perrin. This marked the culmination of 3 years hard work for the Boys who were also promoted to the company section. After the awards the guests and boys enjoyed the refreshments which included home made cake made by one of our church members which was appreciated much appreciated. I am extremely grateful to all those who have helped in the company over the past 12 month, from officers to helpers and to the parents but at this point I must thank Sheila who, with over 50 years service to the Boys’ Brigade, has decided to retire. She taught me when I was a lad in the life boys and had taught many before me and many after me. We presented Sheila with a silver medal to remind her of the good times in the brigade and we wish her well in the future. At the same time Teresa left the company, she has been helping Sheila for 14 years and we also thank her for these years of dedication. To finish the session we took all the boys 10 pin bowling and as a special treat we fed them in the wimpy. At the end of the evening Cameron Jones came out on top of the bowling tree and to complete proceedings Aiden Breen was We start back in September with Jane taking over the Juniors and we look forward to the session to come and hope we can fill the boots left by some long standing officers over the past few years. We have boys moving up to the Juniors and 4 moving into the company section, the 4 boys already in the company section are re-starting a senior section so now we will be running 4 sections between 6 o’clock and 8.30 p.m. We must now start recruiting for new boys in the anchor boys so if you know of any boys between the ages of 5 and 18 they are always welcome on a Friday evening. We have three events coming up in October: • 5th - Annual enrolment service with the Girls’ Brigade where we will be celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the foundation of the Boys’ Brigade. • 11th - Coffee Morning at Toller in Gold Street 10 a.m. - 12noon • 24th - Beetle drive in the church hall at 7.00 p.m.

The Girls’ Brigade - Jeanette Mitchell

Explorers The Explorers have been busy with Cross Stitch. The girls enjoyed doing these letters, which they had to design first and then chose the colour of the thread they wanted and the fabric too. After they had done the cross stitch the girls went around the edge to high-light their initials. This picture along with others is in the window of the old Sterlings Shoe Shop in the town centre to promote the Company along with the Boys’ Brigade. In September our Explorer Section will be down to three members—if you know of any girls aged 4+ (school Reception Year) who would like to come along and play games, make new friends and learn different skills too then please send them along to us on a Monday evening at 6 o’clock we would love to see them! Juniors and Seniors At the end of last term the Juniors and Seniors were learning about people with special needs. This involved the Seniors seeing how the Church building effected people by being pushed around in the wheelchair and encountering the problems which would face someone in a wheel-chair. Also taking account of the hearing loop system and the hymn books with large print. The Juniors also enjoyed an evening of board games and puzzles after finishing all their badge work. On the final evening all the girls (and the Officers and auxiliaries too!) all tucked into pizza followed by biscuits and crisps and fruit. A good way to round off the year!!

JUNIOR CHURCH NEWS

Primary & Beginners In July the children brought the pennies into church. We had collected another £60. Ken sent a cheque last month for £344.50. Thank you very much to everyone who helps us to collect all this money. We couldn't do this without your help. We are getting a few children every week during the school break. We hope they are all having a very good holiday and will come back refreshed. If you have been in the hall lately you will have noticed the lovely shiny floor. We thank those who put a lot of work into the polishing and those who moved all the furniture out and then back in, now we hope it will be kept in good condition. We hope all our youngsters will have had good tests and results by now and will be able to go on to new classes, new schools and further education. Promotion Sunday During the September parade Sunday service, two of our youngsters, Jonathan and Tommy, will move from the primary and beginners into the junior part of the church. We hope they will enjoy their time with Phillip, Jane and Zoe. Stephan is coming into the primary and beginners to help the youngsters on the Sundays Simon cannot make it. It would be nice to have another helper in the Junior department so when all the children are here we can split them into Juniors and seniors now we have a number of them going into senior school. If you feel called to teach the young people of Carey please feel free to come and talk to me, it may even mean only helping twice a month or on a rota so the other leaders can take communion from time to time. THE STRONG WORD - Rev. Peter Strong

August  2008 -

I do hope whether you have managed to get away or have stayed at home this summer that you have had a good break from the normal and routine- and that you are refreshed. I suppose you will not be surprised for me to go on to say that I hope you are properly refreshed so you are ready to start again the routine that marks our Church life! I should like to thank those who have done things over the summer to get ready for the new season, including those who cleaned and sealed the floor in the Hall. It has also been good to see Sunday congregations have held up fairly well during the summer time, despite holidays and outings. But now we begin again in earnest. There are things to come to and opportunities of fellowship that I hope you will take as we move through the season -please note the article on the Bible Studies to take place in September /October. There are things around the church that need doing, if you feel there is something you can do that needs doing then have a chat with someone and lets do it! There are also future plans and thoughts to consider. We do need to be honest and realistic about where and what we believe is the future. I do sense around the church a resignation to the future rather than an enthusiasm for some change. I do not believe that God will make us go against our will or do things we really do not want to do but I do think that he would expect an enthusiasm and a sense of purpose as we continue to think, talk and pray, and eventually move in a particular direction. I look forward to meeting you all again in the various meetings and situations and I hope and pray that the Lord will continue to refresh and bless us as we work together, and that more friends will come and join us, just as we have welcomed friends amongst us in recent months.
